Memories of apple day 2002… Hurricane winds lashed us with rain and blew every apple off our trees, rivers of water poured off the fields… and most sane people stayed at home.
This year (2003) was sunny and mild… and over 150 people celebrated apple day at UG. We pressed juice, bobbed for apples, tried to get the longest peel, tasted many different varieties… and generally had a scrumptious time with organic apples in abundance.
Fond memories of scrumping, "when I was a lad", came flooding back to the older visitors as their kids went up trees shaking down apples. For our younger visitors this was a chance to see that apples don’t always come out of a plastic bag… and juice doesn’t always come out of a carton. …and so tasty too!
People asked for tips on pruning, planting and choosing varieties of fruit from our experts. Or, just wandered round the gardens and orchards enjoying what was a beautiful day…
Our next open day will be the Seed Swap Day, 29th February, 2004.
